Dr. Matthew Freeman joins SMC to provide Orthopedic Surgery, Total Joint Replacements, & Sports Medicine

Dr. Freeman specializes in sports-related injuries of the knee, elbow, and shoulder, as well as total joint replacement and general fracture care. With a background as a Division I baseball pitcher, he has a particular focus on shoulder and elbow injuries in throwing athletes. Dr. Freeman's commitment to patient care includes extensive training in ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction and repair, with experience serving the Kansas City Royals during spring training. He is proud to be an assistant team physician for the University of Nebraska baseball and softball programs and excited to bring his expertise to the SMC community.

Dr. Freeman was raised in Elkhorn, Nebraska. He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nutritional Science while he also pitched for the University of Nebraska baseball program. He then completed medical school at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE. Following medical school, he completed five years of orthopaedic surgical residency where he was awarded the Junior Resident of the Year along with the Jon Connolly Award for Academic Excellence as a graduating chief resident. He was additionally elected into the Gold Humanism Honor Society. 

Following five years of residency, Dr. Freeman spent an additional year training at the University of Kansas Health System in Kansas City, KS where he completed an orthopaedic sports medicine fellowship. During fellowship, he worked alongside the orthopaedic surgeons caring for the Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals and additionally worked with the University of Kansas Division I Athletic Department. 

Dr. Freeman specializes in the treatment of sports-related injuries of the knee, elbow, and shoulder along with total joint replacement surgery and general fracture care. As a former collegiate Division I baseball pitcher, Dr. Freeman has specific interests in caring for the throwing athlete including shoulder and elbow injuries. During fellowship, he spent additional time training in ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction and repair along with travel to the Dominican Republic and spring training for the Kansas City Royals. 

He serves as an assistant team physician for the University of Nebraska baseball and softball programs. Dr. Freeman is married and has three children. While not working, he enjoys spending time with his family, spending time outdoors and living an active lifestyle.
