Dr. Knox talks about Mammography and Breast Cancer

Dr. Stacey Knox: A Compassionate Leader in Breast Cancer Care

Dr. Stacey Knox’s path to becoming an oncologist was shaped by both her fascination with the science of cancer and a deeply personal family experience. "I have always enjoyed the science of cancer, all the changes that occur inside a cell," she says. While in medical school, Dr. Knox's grandmother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and chose not to pursue treatment. Dr. Knox played a crucial role in caring for her during her final days, an experience that deeply influenced her career. "I was able to show her how much I loved her and how much her love and care had always meant to me," she reflects. This personal connection drives her to work tirelessly to cure her patients, but when that isn't possible, she focuses on ensuring that they have quality time with their loved ones, filled with comfort and peace.

For those who may feel hesitant about getting a mammogram, Dr. Knox offers practical and reassuring advice. "I would talk to friends and family for reassurance. There are a lot of concerns about discomfort, but this is usually very manageable and lasts just a few seconds. The radiation from a mammogram is minimal and safe for yearly exposure. Mammograms are life-saving and, in the end, worth a little discomfort, anxiety, and radiation," she explains. Early detection is key, and with a 99% survival rate for stage 1 breast cancer, Dr. Knox emphasizes the importance of catching cancer early through routine screenings.

When meeting new patients diagnosed with breast cancer, Dr. Knox is committed to making an overwhelming diagnosis more manageable. "I always work to help you understand a very overwhelming diagnosis," she says. Her goal is to alleviate the fear and anxiety surrounding the diagnosis and to walk patients through a treatment plan designed to achieve the best possible outcome. Dr. Knox understands the emotional toll that cancer can take, and she is dedicated to supporting her patients emotionally as well as medically. "We work together to help them regain a sense of control and move forward with hope and determination," she adds.

Dr. Knox’s dedication to her patients is evident in every aspect of her work. She blends her scientific expertise with deep compassion, guiding her patients through treatment with a focus on healing and quality of life. Her approach not only addresses the physical challenges of cancer but also provides emotional support, making her a true advocate for her patients' well-being.
