For Paula (Byrd) White, RN, returning to Wahoo wasn’t about leaving something behind — it was about coming home to what matters most.

After completing her education and gaining valuable experience at a larger hospital, Paula felt drawn back to the community that shaped her. “Wahoo is a wonderful community,” she shared. “I’m grateful for the experience I gained at a ‘big hospital,’ but it’s special to be in an environment where I feel valued and where I know I can truly make a difference.”

That sense of purpose — combined with deep personal connections — made Saunders Medical Center the right place to continue her nursing career. “There are so many kind people in Saunders County,” Paula said. “I’m happy I can serve them professionally, but also treat them like family.”

What stood out most to Paula at SMC was the supportive environment and meaningful workflow. “I enjoy the workflow here, and I feel very appreciated for the work I do,” she explained. “That makes a huge difference as a nurse.”

Caring for people she knows adds another layer of responsibility — and reward. “Because I’m known by quite a few people, I hope it gives them a sense of trust and confidence in their healthcare team,” Paula said. “It feels even more personal. I truly care for many of my patients beyond the hospital walls.”

Practicing healthcare in a familiar community has shaped Paula’s approach to care in powerful ways. Relationships matter. Trust matters. And every interaction feels meaningful when you’re caring for neighbors, friends, and families you know.

While returning home wasn’t without its challenges — including a commute from Omaha — Paula has found unexpected peace in the drive. “I’ve actually been enjoying the quiet time,” she shared.

With years of experience behind her, Paula was also excited about the opportunity to lead and support others at SMC. “I was happy to help lead the team and train new staff,” she said. “Being able to share knowledge and help others grow is incredibly rewarding.”

Looking ahead, Paula hopes her passion for nursing and her love for her hometown continue to make a positive impact. “Hopefully, my dedication helps strengthen the health and well-being of our community,” she said.

Her advice to other healthcare professionals considering a return to their roots?

“Do it,” Paula said without hesitation. “It’s so nice to be known, respected, and recognized for your contribution.”

For Paula White, coming home has meant more than just a job — it’s a chance to care for her community with heart, trust, and purpose.
