Patient Registration Tech

Job Overview

Saunders Medical Center is seeking a Patient Registration Tech to provide a welcoming, accurate and efficient experience for patients from the moment they arrive. This position is responsible for registering new and existing patients, gathering and entering demographic and insurance information, collecting co-pays, scanning required documents and directing patients to the appropriate departments.

The Patient Registration Tech also provides backup support for the hospital switchboard, answers incoming calls, schedules appointments and connects patients and callers with the appropriate staff. Strong computer skills, telephone communication and customer service skills are important in this patient-facing role.

Key Responsibilities

• Register new and existing patients accurately and efficiently.
• Gather, review and enter patient demographic and insurance information.
• Collect and enter patient co-pays.
• Collect, scan and maintain required patient documents.
• Direct patients to the appropriate departments and provide assistance with questions.
• Answer incoming calls and route callers to the appropriate personnel.
• Provide backup support for the hospital switchboard, including forwarding emergency calls through the Vocera system.
• Take messages and direct calls to voicemail when appropriate personnel are unavailable.
• Schedule appointments and assist patients with general questions about Saunders Medical Center.
• Provide courteous, professional service to patients, prospective patients, visitors, physicians and staff.
• Handle difficult or emotional customer situations with professionalism and respect.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA requirements.
• Participate in required safety, security, infection control, compliance and training programs.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualificiations

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Computer experience.
• Strong telephone and interpersonal communication skills.
• Excellent customer service skills.
• Ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients, visitors, physicians and staff.
• Ability to read, write and follow written and oral instructions.
• Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations necessary for the position.
• Ability to make appropriate independent decisions when circumstances require.
• Strong attendance and dependability.
• Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and follow HIPAA requirements.
• No professional certification or license is required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous healthcare, medical office, hospital registration or customer service experience.
• Experience with patient registration, insurance information or appointment scheduling.
• Experience working in a busy medical office or hospital setting.
• Familiarity with electronic health records or other healthcare computer systems.
• Experience handling a high volume of telephone calls while providing friendly, professional service.
